  • Blood Tests: These tests—including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies, and a complete blood count (CBC)—help detect inflammation and specific antibodies that may indicate rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Imaging Tests: Imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are used to assess joint inflammation and detect any damage to the joints.

Treatments to help manage RA include:

  • Medications: The medications listed below are commonly used to help treat RA.
    • NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs): These can help ease pain and bring down swelling in the joints.
    • Steroids: Medicines like prednisone can reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and help protect your joints from further damage.
    • DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs): These are important medications that work to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and help prevent long-term joint damage.
  • Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can guide people through exercises and treatments that help keep joints flexible, reduce stiffness, and build strength.
  • Occupational Therapy: An occupational therapist can help find easier ways to do everyday tasks and may recommend tools or techniques to protect joints.
  • Surgery: If the joints become badly damaged, surgery might be needed to repair or replace them, especially if other treatments haven’t helped.
